Man arrested twice in city within hours

November 20, 2012

WOONSOCKET — A city man was arrested twice in a matter of hours this weekend, once for assaulting his girlfriend and a second time for violating an order to stay away from her.
The copy of the no-contact order was still in the pocket of 55-year-old Michael J. Lafferty of 133 Providence St. following his second arrest Sunday morning, shortly after being released from the police lockup.
Police said the bizarre drama began about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, when Lafferty pushed his girlfriend into a wall at home during what was described as an unprovoked outburst of violence.
The alleged victim, 35 years old, told police Lafferty reacted violently when he overheard a conversation she was having with a female relative about chest pains. They were talking about whether the other woman should be taken to the hospital when, for no apparent reason, Lafferty began yelling at them and shoved her forcefully.
Describing Lafferty as “highly intoxicated” at the time, police said they encountered him outside the residence when they responded to a 911 call.
