Cumberland woman escapes injury after SUV hits deer

November 30, 2012

LINCOLN — A 56-year-old Cumberland woman escaped injury when her 2012 Toyota Highlander struck a deer on Lonsdale Avenue Tuesday morning.
Debra Kociuba of Shelter Lane, Cumberland, had been traveling south on Lonsdale Avenue near Edgehill Avenue, when the deer bolted out of the woods and ran into the side of the Highlander, Patrolman Bradley W. Stewart reported.
The collision caused heavy damage to the Highlander’s front passenger side bumper and required the vehicle to be towed from the scene. The deer was found dead nearby and Stewart notified the State Department of Environmental Management of its location so that it could be picked up, police said.
The increased number of deer in the community has prompted review of the town ordinance banning deer hunting. An ordinance revision under consideration by the Town Council’s Ordinance Committee would allow archery hunting of deer on parcels of privately owned land five acres or greater if the landowner grants written permission.
The change would also require bow hunters to register their intent to hunt on a parcel with the Police Department and also file a copy of the landowner’s written permission to hunt on their land. The hunting, prohibited on town property, would be conducted in compliance with DEM hunting regulations, according to the proposal. The measure is expected to be considered the Council at an upcoming meeting.
