Historical Society plans Dec. 8 open house

November 30, 2012

WOONSOCKET — The Historical Society will be hosting its annual Christmas open house on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 1-4 p.m.
Many of the historical society’s old toys will be on display. Guests are invited to bring an old toy for “Show & Tell.”
Also on display will be a personal collection of “head vases” that date to the 1950’s and 1960’s. Head vases depict a woman’s head with a hat and were used by florists for floral arrangements. Today, they are highly collectible.
Visitors can also enjoy viewing a handmade candy house from society member Julien Bessette. It measures 3-foot long, 1-foot wide and 2.5-feet tall. This is the 37th year he has made the traditional Bessette Family Candy House for Christmas.
Just in time for your holiday shopping, assorted Woonsocket history books can be purchased.
The 2012 mug and tile depicting the Woonsocket Call will be on sale as well as previous years. Since 1979, the historical society has been putting out a mug and tile featuring a different Woonsocket landmark. The Woonsocket postcard booklet featuring 24 different city postcards will be available as well as an assortment of local history books.
As a special bonus, the 1926 Stadium Theatre building commemorative book will be on sale. This book accompanied the opening of the theater and would make a wonderful Christmas gift.
The public is invited to attend the open house; light refreshments will be served.
The Woonsocket Historical Society is located at 42 South Main St., Garden Level, in Woonsocket (behind the Museum of Work & Culture).
