Adopt-A-Family armed with gifts

December 11, 2012

WOONSOCKET — It was almost an example of military organization and efficiency as the Adopt-a-Family drive began its distribution of holiday gifts to needy Woonsocket families this week at the Elk’s Hall on Social Street.
Volunteers carefully checked delivered bags of donated gifts against the master list of eligible recipients prepared by Family Resources Community Action to make sure the proper number of presents had been assembled.
The bags were then numbered according to a pick-up schedule so everything would be ready when the family members arrived at their appointed time to collect the gifts.
New bicycles included in the donations were even passed through a safety check to make sure they had been properly assembled with working brakes and inflated tires.
Julie Wunderlich, president of the Adopt-a-family drive, said it appeared this year’s drive was a success even as the gifts continued to be organized by the program’s volunteers.
“We had a great year, it’s going to help over 1,000 families and more than 2,100 children, she said.
The drive seeks three to four donations of clothing for each child it serves and two to three toys in addition to a stuffed Christmas stocking. The children benefiting range from infant to age 12, Wunderlich said.
