CUMBERLAND- Chomka, Walter, 82, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Tuesday, December 11, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Sarah (Higgins) Chomka. They were happily married for fifty nine years.
Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Michael and Michaelena (Ciolkowska) Chomka.
A lifelong resident of Cumberland, Walter was the owner of Vose Hardware, a volunteer fireman for many years in Cumberland Hill, an avid polka dancer, and a clarinet player in the Merry Bells Polka Band. He graduated from Cumberland High School in 1947. He ran the former Chomka's Market and Fruit stand, and served on Saint Joan of Arc's Church first parish council.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Margaret Ganim, Edward Chomka and his wife Susan, Patricia Landry and her husband Steven, Steven Chomka and his wife Lynne, Ann Marie Jalette, and Walter Chomka Jr. and his wife Nellie; his grandchildren, Alexandra, Katherine, and Christine Ganim, Evan Chomka, Brianna, Nicholas, and Julie Landry, Keith Chomka, Eric Chomka and his wife Elizabeth, Jack, Alexander, and Christopher Jalette. He also leaves his brother, Frank Chomka. He was the brother of the late Edward John Chomka, Cecilia Chomka, and Pauline Sobota.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday at 10am in Saint Joan of Arc Church, 3357 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 3-8pm in the O'NEILL Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mt. St. Rita's Health Center, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland, RI, 02864, would be appreciated. www.rifuneral.com
