Concert to benefit Sandy Hook fund

January 7, 2013

LINCOLN — The Closers can’t always make things right in the world, but when they start rehearsing for a gig, you can be sure the healing has begun.
Whether it’s breast cancer research or solving the puzzle of arthritis, the band inspired by charitable causes has a new reason to polish its repertoire – the tragedy at Sandy Hook.
The moonlighting musicians of The Closers are in the woodshed again, preparing for a Jan. 24 show at The Met in Pawtucket to benefit the Newtown Memorial Fund. The fund was established for the sole purpose of memorializing the 26 victims of last month’s shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., including 20 children who were six and seven years old.
“Most of us all have little children around the same age,” says Jim Marini, one of the band’s two drummer/vocalists. “That’s kind of the main thing that sparked the whole idea.”
While The Closers play the occasional event just for kicks, the band doesn’t usually get together for a show except for charitable fundraisers because they all have regular day jobs. In the recent past, they’ve performed for The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation, the Relay for Life and the Arthritis Foundation of New England.
When the horrific stories of Adam Lanza’s inexplicably deadly rampage began flooding the news channels, Marini was so shocked he practically forgot about the band’s uniquely charitable mission.
