While he heads to Elon University in hopes of making waves with the schoolâs football program, Cumberland native Trevor Vasey also heads south with the intent of raising awareness of potential quarterback prospects among Rhode Island high school football circles.
Itâs no secret that the Ocean State has been a bit player when it comes to churning out Division I college quarterbacks. La Salle graduate Liam Coen enjoyed a stellar career at UMass Amherst, while Bobby Bentsen via Warwick Vets went from not having an athletic scholarship to starting under center at URI this past season.
Other than Coen and Bentsen, you would be hard pressed to come up with a quarterback with firm Ocean State ties who has recently gone on to compete at a high-end collegiate level. You have to go back to when current South Kingstown High athletic director Terry Lynch enrolled at URI in the early 80s â he went to Rhody as a quarterback but ended up finishing his career as a tight end.
Thatâs why Vasey, a 2011 graduate of St. Raphael Academy, seems himself as a torch bearer, someone who hopes to open eyes with his play with Elon, which in turn would show that you can climb to great heights with âRhode Islandâ stamped on oneâs birth certificate.
âTrevor is especially proud that heâs representing Rhode Island and carrying a flag for the state,â remarked Todd Vasey, Trevorâs father and head football coach at Dean College. âHow well he does will be important for the other guys in the state.â
