Accused child molester recaptured after flight

PROVIDENCE — A man awaiting trial on Burrillville police charges of child molestation was recaptured here Wednesday after a week on the lam from home confinement, the state police said.
Robert Spaulding, 34, surrendered after State Police searched for him at his mother’s house and the homes of other relatives and friends.
“His trial was coming up,” said Detective Commander Michael J. Winquist of the state police. “I guess he thought he wasn’t going to be there.”
Spaulding’s most recent address was 762 Greenville Ave. in Johnston, but he had previously lived at addresses in Burrillville and Woonsocket, the state police said in a statement issued earlier this week.
The Department of Corrections notified the state police that Spaulding, who had been bailed to home confinement, slipped out of his electronic monitoring bracelet sometime between Dec. 26 and 28 and that his whereabouts could not be established. The attorney general’s division issued a warrant for his arrest and the state police violent fugitive task force began looking for him.
He is awaiting trial on three counts of first-degree child molestation lodged against him by the Burrillville Police Department in July 2010.
“Awesome,” was the reaction of Burrillville Detective Sgt. Guy Riendeau when he learned that Spaulding was back in custody yesterday.
