Fire panel sets trustee workshop

January 20, 2013

CUMBERLAND — The three-member Fire Consolidation Subcommittee will hold a workshop meeting with trustees from the town's four fire districts to discuss concerns and ideas relative to a plan to consolidate the town's four independent fire districts.
The workshop is scheduled to be held on Monday, Feb. 4. Attending the session will be Fire Consolidation Subcommittee members Scott R. Schmitt, Arthur Lambi Jr. and William Murray, along with eight trustees — two from each of the four fire districts.
At the request of Mayor Daniel J. McKee, the Town Council appointed the Fire Consolidation Subcommittee of its own members in December to determine the merits of establishing a unified fire board as part of a plan to consolidate the town's four independent fire districts.
The subcommittee is working with Town Solicitor Thomas Hefner to come up with a plan for the implementation of a governance model and to develop a strategy to adopt that model.
The appointments came a month after the council was presented with a final report on the plan being proposed to consolidate the town's four independent fire districts. The report was drafted by Donald I. Jacobs of Holden-based D.I. Jacobs Management Consulting Services after more than a year of study.
Jacob's company was hired to conduct a comprehensive feasibility planning assessment for the purpose of consolidating the town's fire services as either an independent, municipal or regional department.
