Mardi Gras 2013 lives up to annual revelry

WOONSOCKET — It was a night of fun and revelry for the 19th Annual Mardi Gras event held Saturday in Woonsocket.
Festivities took place at two locations with shuttle service bringing partygoers to and from each site —St. Ann's Art's and Cultural Center, where the crowds were entertained by Bob Leonard's Slippery Sneakers Band, a local zydeco band who has been entertaining at the Woonsocket Mardi Gras for many years, and the Elks Hall, where Jeff Gamache and his orchestra entertained the crowd. Gamache has been a local entertainer for many years including at the Woonsocket Autumnfest.
The week-long festivities — which started Jan. 27 with the crowning of Sandy Paul, 2013 Mardi Gras Queen and her court, Princesses Jo-ann Maurice and Kayla Guilbault — culminated with the unmasking of the infamous King Jace. John Gregory, president and CEO of the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, was chosen by Dave Richards to serve as this year’s King.
A series of 10 clues was given out in order to help people guess the identity of King Jace. The winner of the correct guess to his identity was Sally Pratt. The winners of the Queen Contest raffle were also announced: Darin Cooper, T. Lahousse, Mike Sutcliffe, and Roger Malouin.
In addition to raffles, there was a costume contest held at each of the two locations. The winner at St. Ann's for best male was Mike Beaulieu and best female was Glee Violette. St Ann's winners were: Male: Kevin Laferriere; Female: Michelle Tessier.
