WOONSOCKET- Joseph E. Collamati, Sr., 99, a lifelong resident of Woonsocket and well-known businessman passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Mount St. Rita Health Center, Cumberland, RI.
Joseph was the husband of the late Yvonne P. (Gendron) Collamati and son of the late Arduino and Juliette (Richard) Collamati.
He leaves two sons, Joseph E. Collamati, Jr., retired Wrentham, MA, Police Chief, and his wife, Cheryl of Bellingham, MA, and Paul A. Collamati and his wife, Mildred of North Smithfield, RI, five grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
He was the brother of Louis Collamati of Woonsocket, RI, Ernest Collamati and his wife, Germaine of Franklin, MA, Helen Getty of Plainville, MA and Juliette Collamati of Stayton, OR, and predeceased by brothers Albert, Lucien, and Romeo and sister Cecilia Baisley. He leaves his sisters-in-law, Marie Collamati, Helen Collamati and Dora Collamati.
Mr. Collamati was owner and operator of Collamati's Super Market from 1948 to 1963 retiring as District Manager for Almac's Super Markets in 1977. During World War II Joseph served in the Pacific Theatre as Quartermaster aboard the USS San Francisco and received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific 4 Stars, and the Philippine Liberation 1 Star.
Mr. Collamati was an avid photographer pleasing family, friends, and acquaintances with his coverage of numerous activities and events. He was an accomplished musician on the organ and other instruments. He was an inventor, impressing friends and family with his knowledge of how things work and creating time-saving devices at home and at work. He loved motor vehicles, gadgets, and electronics including computers. Joseph traveled extensively at home and abroad and enjoyed good food frequenting area restaurants on a daily basis. As an artist, Joseph designed and lettered his own business advertisements utilizing various mediums and techniques. In 2003, Mr. Collamati won the Mayor's Woonsocket Beautification Award for his beautiful lawn and impressive plantings for which he had earned many accolades from the populace over the years. Most of all, Joseph loved and enjoyed his family and will be greatly missed by them and all who knew him.
Mr. Collamati was a member of various organizations over the years and was a communicant of All Saints Church in Woonsocket.
Funeral will be held on Friday, March 1st with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM at All Saints Church, 323 Rathbun St., Woonsocket, RI. Interment with military honors will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland, RI. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are no calling hours.
