Gun-wielding gang invades Burrillville home

March 6, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — Police were investigating a report of gunfire occurring during the robbery of a home at 160 Cherry Farm Road Wednesday evening that did not result in injury to the residents at home during the incident.
Acting Police Chief Lareto P. Guglietta said members of his department were working with Woonsocket Police on the 7:20 p.m. shooting incident and arrests were expected.
“We are still investigating and we have Woonsocket Police assisting us,” Guglietta said. “We hope to make arrests this evening if possible,” Guglietta said. “It is slowly coming together,” he said of facts behind the dangerous incident.
The Burrillville Department received a call of shots fired inside the residence at 160 Cherry Farm Road at about 7:20 p.m., according to Guglietta.
The suspects were reported to have fled in a tan-colored vehicle before police arrived on scene and spoke to the owner of home, Frank L. Hopkins, 60, according to Guglietta. Five males wearing hooded sweatshirts were reported to have entered Hopkins’ residence and two are believed to have been armed with handguns, police said. One of the suspects was reported to have fired a gun in the home, according to Guglietta. None of the five residents inside the home were hurt, he added. A safe, said to contain $2,000 in cash, was reported taken from the home during the robbery. In addition to working with Woonsocket Police on the case, Burrillville Police passed on details of the incident to police
departments in the surrounding area as well as members of the Rhode Island State Police.
Guglietta said the investigation was continuing just before 10 p.m. Wednesday and declined to provide further details until suspects had been arrested and charged in the matter.
“We have taken statements and the investigation is continuing,” he said. “We were very lucky no one was injured,” Guglietta said of the gunfire occurring in the occupied dwelling.
