WOONSOCKET — School Committeewoman Anita McGuire-Forcier, a former chair of the panel, was reported to be undergoing treatment at Rhode Island Hospital Wednesday night after being struck by a car in front of the Rhode Island State House.
Forcier, a staunch advocate of the city’s need for added funding for its school children, was reported to have been at the State House to testify at a hearing before the accident occurred.
McGuire had just completed an interview with television media, in fact, and had started to cross Smith Street in a crosswalk when she was struck, according to police sources.
A female driver was reportedly issued traffic citations in the incident investigated by Providence Police but not found to be impaired, according to the reports on the incident.
McGuire’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening but she remained at the hospital undergoing tests and treatment late Wednesday.
McGuire has testified at the State House numerous times in her quest to have the state’s school aid formula revised to one providing greater benefit to distressed districts like Woonsocket. She spoke about her interest in getting more support for local schools at the School Committee’s recent meeting.
