Aldi supermarket plans April 4 grand opening

March 17, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Work on the new Aldi supermarket at Dowling Village is wrapping up and Town Administrator Paulette Hamilton said on Friday plans are in the works for the store’s grand opening the morning of April 4.
Hamilton has been invited to the store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony that morning and noted there will be grand opening giveaways and other activities at the store.
“We are very excited about that; the only other Aldi's I am aware of in Rhode Island is in Providence,” she said of the Germany-based supermarket chain’s arrival in the Blackstone Valley.
Aldi is a discount food retailer that offers many of its own product lines. The stores are low-overhead and feature green technology in their operations, Hamilton noted.
Aldi will follow the recent opening of the new Lowe’s home improvement store at Dowling Village even as Bucci Development continues work on sites for future tenants at the large commercial development off Eddie Dowling Highway.
Work has already begun on the proposed Denny’s restaurant at the corner of Dowling Village, near CVS, and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island. Hamilton said Bucci Development is also reported to be closing on additional businesses for Dowling Village including a much-talked about Kohl’s Department store.
“We understand they are moving forward on Kohl’s and that will be the next one you see starting construction,” Hamilton said.
There are additional restaurants and other businesses in the works as well, Hamilton said.
“There is a lot more expansion to come, so we are happy about that,” she added.
The $85 million mixed-use development at the North Smithfield-Woonsocket line has been progressing at a modest pace since opening its first retail property in 2008 and its first anchor, the Walmart Superstore near the 133-acre property’s southern outlet onto Eddie Down Highway, Route 146A.
Site work continues on parcels for future development at Dowling Village. Hamilton said the State of Rhode Island will also be resuming improvements to the Eddie Dowling Highway corridor from the Dowling Village traffic signal at the south entrance to Park Square this spring and summer.
The state has already put in new curbing and sidewalks in the area and will now be looking to repave the roadway and redesign the highway median to a design more esthetically compatible with the Dowling Village improvements.
“It is going to beautify the whole area,” Hamilton said.
