PASCOAG- Brother Normand R. Goudreau, S.C., 68, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died after a courageous battle with cancer on March 21, 2013 at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence, RI.
Born in Central Falls, RI, he was the son of the late William and Cora (Chagnon) Goudreau.
Brother Normand entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart September 4, 1960 at Harrisville, Rhode Island. He pronounced his first vows in Harrisville in 1963 and his perpetual vows at Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI, in 1969. In August, 2013, he would have celebrated his Fiftieth Anniversary of Religious Profession.
Brother Normand availed himself of every educational opportunity presented to him and thus completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama in 1967, a Master's in Education at Rhode Island College in 1975, a Master's Degree in Theology and Religious Education at St. Michael's College, Colchester, Vermont, in 1985 and an MEd in School Administration from the University of Vermont in 1991.
Brother Normand served in assignments as a teacher in New England at St. Andre's School, Biddeford, ME, Sacred Heart School, Sharon, MA, Sacred Heart School, Andover, MA, St. Peters School, Lewiston, ME, Christ the King School, Burlington, VT, Northwest Catholic Elementary School, Pascoag, RI, and on three different occasions at Mt. St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI. In 1994, after his educational career, he moved to the Provincial House in Pascoag, RI, where he was a master gardener, craftsman, artist, cook, and general handyman. He utilized his skills in refurbishing most of the rooms of the residence.
In 1999 he spent a semester at a sabbatical program in Rome, Italy.
Brother Normand is survived by his sister, Beatrice Choquette of Florida, his sister Pauline Lima and her husband Edward of Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Gerard and Roger, and his sister Rita.
The wake will be held at the Provincial House, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI, Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in the Chapel of the Provincial House at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery in Pascoag. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother Normands memory can be made to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Retirement Fund, Business Office, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI 02859. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home 1496 Victory Hwy. Oakland RI.
