PAWTUCKET – Before anyone gets too alarmed, let David Ortiz explain what “good sore” means.
“General soreness … we did a lot today,” the Red Sox designated hitter clarified as to why he came out following three at-bats in Pawtucket’s 5-4 win over Rochester Thursday night at McCoy Stadium. “I was getting cold out there and I was getting a little sore.”
The fact that Ortiz is dealing with minimal pain after what was a busy and productive first rehab game with the PawSox should be interpreted as a good sign. He was able to put his injured heels through a serious workout on the base paths – twice he went in motion on 3-2 pitches in the third inning before displaying no hesitation after going from first to third on a double into the left-center gap by Mark Hamilton in the fifth inning.
“Being able to run around the bases and move around was good,” said Ortiz, who finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and one run. “With no hesitation, I was able to run the bases.”
The workout Ortiz went through on the base paths took a base seat to the fact that he struck out on a changeup in the first inning and stroked two singles that were deposited up the middle.
“I want to make sure that I accomplish that,” said Ortiz when asked about his stint with the PawSox serving as a condensed version of spring training.
Despite the good sore, Ortiz confirmed that he’s all systems go to continue his rehab on Friday.
