Albert Edouard Gabriel Bonte

GREER, SOUTH CAROLINA- Albert Edouard Gabriel Bonte, 89, of Greer, South Carolina, died peacefully November 2, 2012 with family by his side at NHC National Health Care.
Born April 26, 1923, in Mouvaux (Nord) France, he was the son of the late Eugene Albert Bonte and Eugenie Jeanne (Bellot) Bonte. He emigrated from France as a young child in 1928.
Mr. Bonte attended Woonsocket public schools and later graduated from St. John's Preparatory School, Danvers, MA in 1940. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Providence College in 1946 after serving as a Message Center Clerk in the U. S. Army in central Europe during World War II.
Mr. Bonte was the past Vice President of Administration and Treasurer of Bonte Industries in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. The Bonte family, well known in the textile manufacturing business of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, formed Bonte Spinning Company in 1952 on the banks of the Blackstone River. Mr. Bonte and his brother, the late Andre R. E. Bonte, worked under the direction of their father, the late Eugene A. Bonte. At one time Bonte Industries consisted of three textile plants located in Woonsocket, Laurens, SC and Sumter, SC. During his 33 year career, he worked to computerize all of the firm's production and financial operations as it produced Worsted French Spun weaving and knitting yarns until ceasing business in 1979.
In his community service, Mr. Bonte served on the Woonsocket Planning Board as Vice Chairman from 1962-1970 and as a Director of Rhode Island Blue Cross/Blue Shield (1967-1981). He also served as President of the Woonsocket YMCA and as a Director on the Board of the former Woonsocket Hospital.
Mr. Bonte married the late Mary Lucille (LaFond) Bonte in 1947 and is survived by three children: Ann Bonte Hackett (James) of Cedar, Michigan, William Albert Bonte of Florida, and Mary-Lucille Bonte Elias (Daniel) of Campobello, South Carolina. He was predeceased by a son, Arthur Edouard Bonte in 1986.
In retirement, Mr. Bonte resided in Falmouth, MA, Stuart, FL and finally in Greer, SC. He was a voracious reader and self-taught man. Whether medicine, politics or finance, he was not afraid to embrace new ideas or new methods and to share those thoughts with others. He will be remembered for his divergent thinking, strong convictions and love of family.
A private family service was held on April 13, 2013 in Stuart, FL before his ashes were placed at sea off the coast. In lieu of cards or flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the Foothills Humane Society, 989 Little Mountain Rd, Columbus, NC, 28722 or to the charity of one's choice.
