RALEIGH, NC- Richard L. Blackman, 89, of Raleigh, formerly of Fort Myers, FL, went to his eternal rest February 7, 2013, after a long illness.
He was born in Omaha, NE, son of George and Dorothy (Hansbrough) Blackman, one of 11 children; raised in Council Bluffs, IA. Richard joined the US Navy in WWII, became a Seabee and served in the Pacific. Upon his return in 1946, he married Cecile Paul in Woonsocket, RI, where they lived and worked for many years. While living in RI, Richard (Dick) became well known as an older long distance runner with the "Woonsocket Harriers". He raised a considerable amount of money for charities with his runs; qualified and ran in the Boston Marathon several times.
Richard's retirement from the USPS brought the Blackmans to America Outdoors in Fort Myers, FL in the 80's, where he quickly became known as "Mr. Fix-it" to many. He and Cecile celebrated 50 years of marriage there. She preceded him in death in 1996.
Over the years, Dick was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus, and Seabees Island X-8, Lee Company.
Richard is survived by his wife, Doris (Stewart) Michel Blackman, whom he married in 2001; one sister, Dorothy Shiriashi, of AZ; godson/nephew, Richard (Denise) Petrin, of RI; sisters in law, Muriel (Joseph) Durand, of NJ, Veronica Alletto, of SC, and Anna Jaeger, of NY; brothers in law, Joseph Paul, of RI, and John (Kathleen) Stewart, of FL; stepchildren, Doreen (Gary) McCoy, of NY, Kathleen Michel-Hayes, of NC, and Henry J. Michel, of NY; and other special family members, Theresa (Peter) Mason, of NY, and Michael (Donna) Streath, of SC; 5 step grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard and Doris served in several ministries at Our Lady of Light Catholic Community, in Ft. Myers, FL (Estero Area). A Mass to celebrate Richard's life will be offered there on March 16, 2013 at 11:00AM.
On May 18, 2013, there will be a Mass at 10:00AM, at St. Agatha R.C. Church in Woonsocket, RI. Interment and of his remains with Military Honors will follow at St. Jean The Baptiste Cemetery.
