PROVIDENCE- Mary P. "Prossy" Rynn, 85, a resident of Epoch Assisted Living, Blackstone Blvd., Providence, died peacefully on Wednesday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. She previously resided in Westchester County, New York for 30 years. Her beloved husband, William V. Rynn, predeceased her.
Born in Woonsocket, Mary was the daughter of the late William A. McCarthy and Mary (King) McCarthy.
She was a graduate of the College of New Rochelle, class of 1949, where she transformed from a homesick freshman to President of the Student Body.
Mary was a lifelong educator, serving as an administrator in the New York City School Department before retiring in 1994. From 1952 thru 1989 she served on the Board of Directors of McCarthy's Department Store. The store, located in Woonsocket, was owned and operated by her family for over 100 years.
Mary was a former member of the Bronxville Women's Club, the Dunes Club and the Alumni Association of the College of New Rochelle. An active member of the Alzheimer's Association in Westchester, she advocated on behalf of those affected by the disease.
Mary leaves her four children: Alison Clifford, of North Smithfield; Stephen W. Rynn, of Somerset, New Jersey; William C. Rynn, of Boone, North Carolina; and Susan M. Rynn, of Dobbs Ferry, New York. She was the mother of the late Mary P. Fink; her sister, Alice P. Vogt, and brother, William L. McCarthy, also predeceased her.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church Street, Slatersville on Saturday, May 18th at 10:00AM. Calling hours are respectfully omitted and burial services at St. Charles Cemetery in Blackstone, Massachusetts will be private. The Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket is directing arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 or the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
