WOONSOCKET- Matteo (Matt) Giuliano, 88, of Woonsocket, RI, passed away June 2, 2013 in the Woonsocket Health and Rehabiliation Center, after a courageous battle with Parkinsons disease, with his family by his side.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Margaret (Klowan) Giuliano, a daughter Mary, a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Susan Giuliano of North Smithfield, 2 grandchildren, Michael and Alexa Giuliano, a brother Frank Giuliano, his sister-in-law, Alice Lanctot and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Born October 18, 1924 in Bristol, RI, a son of the late Leonardo and Marie G. (Lannoli) Giuliano. He lived in Woonsocket for over 86 years. He was drafted in 1943, just before his graduation from Woonsocket High School. Matt then served in the US Army in WWII from 1943-1946 and was promoted to Sergeant, while stationed in France. His tour of duty included, Belgium, Holland and Germany. His company was on route to Normandy when the war ended and he was honorable discharged in 1946, from the 1016th Engineer Company. He received Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.
He returned home and, for the next 20 years, was the Grocery Manager in the family business, the former Giuliano's Super Market on Arnold Street in Woonsocket. He worked there with his parents and brother, Frank, who was the Meat Cutter/Manager. The market closed in 1969 due to expansion of the larger chain supermarkets and he went on to a new career as an Electronic Technician with The Raytheon Company in various cities and towns in Massachusetts. He worked there 20 years, retiring in 1989. In his spare time he enjoyed boating at his parents summer residence in Bristol, RI, traveling, gardening, photography, duck pin bowling, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Included in his many talents was that he was a great repairman and could fix items which would otherwise have been discarded. He was a member of the Woonsocket Camera Club and was a part time wedding photographer for the former Cameo Studios, which was opened by his brother Frank and his friend, Rudy Graziani, in 1969. He was also an avid Patriots and Red Sox Fan.
Mr. & Mrs. Giuliano were married July 5, 1948 in St. Anthony's Church in Woonsocket.
He will be greatly missed and never forgotten by family and friends.
The family wishes to thank everyone at the Woonsocket Health and Rehabiliation Center for their care and love for Matteo, especially Dr. Alberto Erfe.
A Mass of Christian Burial in which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be held Thursday at 10am in St. Anthony's Church Greene St. Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. Arrangements are entrusted to the Egidio DiPardo & Sons Funeral Home 75 Harris Ave., Woonsocket. Calling hours are omitted.
