CUMBERLAND- Irene S. Mathisen, 86, of Fisher Road, passed away Wednesday at Elmhurst Extended Care, Providence. She was the wife and childhood friend of John Mathisen whom she married 40 years later, and remained happily married for 40 more years.
Born in Union City, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Gustav and Anna (Dowling) Schoenleber. She resided in Cumberland for over 50 years, previously residing in Wayne, NJ.
Mrs. Mathisen was employed as a Real Estate Agent for Coleman Realty for many years and was a member of the RI Realtors Association.
Irene was an accomplished artist, seamstress and gardener. She was an avid New England Patriots fan and enjoyed golf and tennis. Irene loved to laugh and share a beer with family and friends.
Besides her husband, she leaves her two sons, Jeffrey A. Coulter, her devoted caretaker, of Cumberland and Christopher F. Coulter and his wife Linda of Cranston; three daughters, Kimberly Ann Coulter of Cumberland, Leslie I. Smith and her husband Jerome of Woonsocket and Amy Friedman and her husband Andrew of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was the sister of the late John Schoenleber and Ann Hanson.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday with Visiting Hours from 2-5 PM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
The family would like to extend their deep appreciation for the care Irene received while at Elmhurst, Cedar Winds North. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
