LINCOLN – After weeks of pondering his baseball future, Nick Zammarelli decided late Wednesday night that he is heading to Elon University.

The recent Lincoln High graduate made up his mind on the same night that Boston Red Sox scouts Ray Fagnant and Quincy Boyd were on hand to see Zammarelli take batting practice at North Providence High School and in Westerly as North Providence Post 29 took on Gordon Greene Post 27 in R.I. American Legion action.

The Red Sox presented their offer to Zammarelli shortly after the game ended. The prospect quickly informed the organization that he plans to head to school.

Boston began showing significant interest in Zammarelli near the end of his senior year at Lincoln. He was selected in the 28th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft. From Saturday, June 8 until late Wednesday, the Red Sox kept close tabs on the prospect with Fagnant appearing at several Legion games.

A First Team All-State selection as a senior, Zammarelli will now have to wait until his junior year at Elon before he can re-enter the MLB Draft. He verbally committed to Elon during the winter of his junior year of high school and signed his letter of intent last November.
