BREAKING NEWS: FEDS TAKE DEATH PENALTY OFF THE TABLE IN PLEAU CASE

July 26, 2013

WOONSOCKET – After insisting on their right to seek capital punishment in a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, federal prosecutors say they no longer want to put accused killer Jason Wayne Pleau to death.
In a statement released Friday afternoon, U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha said an agreement has been reached with Pleau’s lawyers that will allow him to plead guilty to a federal indictment for the robbery and murder of Woonsocket gas station attendant David Main. In return, the government will withdraw a notice of its intent to seek the death penalty against Pleau for his role in Main’s killing.
Jim Martin, a spokesman for Neronha, said he expects a change of plea hearing to be schedule in U.S. District Court shortly.
Pleau was allegedly the triggerman in a three-person conspiracy to rob Main, 49, of Lincoln, as he deposited receipts from the gas station he managed at Citizens Bank in East Woonsocket on Sept. 20, 2010. Kelly Lajoie, who served as a lookout, has already pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing, while her boyfriend, Jose Santiago, the alleged driver of the getaway truck, has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
Prosecutors say Pleau shot Main in the head just feet from the front entrance of the bank before making off with a satchel containing more than $12,000. Pleau, Santiago and Lajoie divvied up the loot before they were captured just days after the killing.
