BRISTOL – Courtesy of a thrilling 7-5 triumph over Wickford’s best on Sunday evening, the Cumberland American All-Stars mustered a berth in the R.I. Little League Major Division (10-11) Tournament’s title tilt at King Philip Little League’s Pigeon Field.
C.J. Davock gained the victory after scattering seven hits and a walk while whiffing seven in his 4 1/3 innings of work. Trey Thibeault earned a most magnificent save in the sixth; Wickford had plated three to close the deficit to 7-5, but Thibeault “retired the last three on a strikeout and two groundouts,” stated CALL skipper Dave Belisle. “He was outstanding. He put out the fire.”
Cumberland snatched a 1-0 advantage in the first when Davock walked and Jayden Struble – who homered twice during a 15-10 win over Johnston on Saturday – tripled him in.
CALL exploded for six more in the second to, in essence, put the game away. Among the highlights: Davock ripped a two-run double, Sean Meers registered a run-scoring single, and following a hit by Tyler Provost and Kopack’s walk, Nick Croteau delivered an RBI single.
“We were in trouble in the sixth,” Belisle said, stating Sacchetti and Mason Walsh had whacked RBI hits. “They already had scored three, with no outs, and the bases were loaded, but Trey (Thibeault) pitched great.”
CALL now will battle the victor of the Wickford-Johnston losers’ bracket final back at Pigeon Field at 5:30 p.m., Thursday.
