Shirley I. Dupre
WOONSOCKET - Shirley Irene Dupre, 72, died peacefully in her sleep July 18, 2013 in her home in Woonsocket.
She was born to the late Herbert and Irene (Chatel) Kingston, January 9, 1941 in Providence. Shirley graduated from the Sawyer Secretarial College in 1980 and started her career at Woonsocket City Hall as a bookkeeper, payroll clerk and assistant accountant. She was married to Robert Paul Dowdell, Sr. and produced two children, Robert Paul Dowdell, Jr. and Bernard Joseph Dowdell. She remarried after 13 years to Roger P. Dupre and produced their daughter, Allyson M. Dupre Girouard and gained a stepson, Gary Ernest Dupre. They divorced in 1974 and Shirley relocated to Daytona Beach, Florida with her three children.
Shirley was a professional cook. She was very well known in Woonsocket and Manville for her outstanding cooking. While volunteering at the Shamrock in Woonsocket, she cooked for Governor Bruce Sundlun. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, teaching them gardening, canning and cooking. She loved to fish, and she loved the ocean.
Shirley was well known to cook and feed many people who were having hard times, and would always help someone in need. Her amazing heart, and caring personality, along with her wonderful sense of humor, made her a very loved and cherished friend.
Shirley is survived by her daughter and best friend, Allyson M. Dupre Girouard of Burrillville; her son, Paul Robert Dowdell, Jr. of Polson, MT; her stepson, Gary Ernest Dupre of Lincoln; her grandson, Michael Roger Giguere, Jr. of Burrillville; her granddaughters, Rheanna Marie Dowdell of Cheyenne, WY and Miriah Leigh Dowdell of Colorado; her nephew, James Anthony Motte of Riverside, CA; her sons-in-law, Glen Raymond Girouard of Pawtucket and Michael Roger Giguere, Sr. of Burrillville; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Bernard Joseph Dowdell, 30, of Clearwater, FL and her grandson, Glen Raymond Dupre, 20, of Lincoln.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held SATURDAY, AUGUST 3 at 12:30 P.M. in St. James Church, 33 Division Street, Manville with a celebration of her life immediately following at the Enrico Caruso Club, 105 Bouvier Avenue, Manville. For Directions and Guest Book, please visit
