BURRILLVILLE- Brother Paul E. Parenteau, S.C., 88, also known as Brother Eric, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died August 29, 2013 at Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pascoag, RI.
Born in Biddeford, Maine, he was the son of the late Aldeus and Rosilda (Gervais) Parenteau.
Brother Paul entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart June 26, 1946 at Winthrop, Maine. He pronounced his first vows in Arthabaska, PQ, in 1948, and his perpetual vows at Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI, in 1954. In 2008 he celebrated his 60th Anniversary of Religious Profession.
Brother Paul entered religious life after serving in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He completed the teaching diploma from the Qubec Education Department in 1949, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from St. Michaels College, Colchester, VT in 1955, a diploma from the Facult Libre de Mdecine in Lille, France, in 1961, and a Master of Education degree from St. Michaels College in 1966. Brother Paul served in assignments as a teacher in New England at St. Peters School, Lewiston, ME, Sacred Heart Juniorate, Pomfret, CT, Sacred Heart School, Andover, MA, Bishop Guertin High School, Nashua, NH, Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI, and St. Dominic High School, Lewiston, ME. In addition, he served as a missionary in Zambia, Central Africa and Lesotho, Southern Africa for over 28 years. In all of his assignments, he was consistently involved in coaching various sports.
In 1960-1961 he spent a semester at a sabbatical program in Rome, Italy, in 1982 at a spiritual renewal program in Santa Fe, NM, and in 1991 at another program in Santa Barbara, CA. For the past 15 years, Brother Paul has served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist at Bayberry Commons, Pine Grove and Overlook Nursing Homes in Pascoag, RI.
Brother Paul is survived by his sister, Dorothy Dugas of North Waterboro, Maine, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Fernand, and his sisters Aurea, Diana, Cora, and Rita.
The wake will be held at the Provincial House, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI, Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in the Chapel of the Provincial House at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery in Pascoag. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother Paul's memory can be made to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart African Mission Fund, Business Office, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI 02859.
