PawSox win Game 1 of Governors' Cup finals

September 10, 2013

Brock Holt’s two-run single in the top of the eighth inning erased a 1-0 deficit and enabled the Pawtucket Red Sox to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night in the opener of their best-of-five Governors’ Cup championship series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The series will continue tonight back at Durham, and after an off day on Thursday, the defending International League champion PawSox will host the rest of the series, with Game 3 taking place on Friday at McCoy Stadium.
Four pitchers teamed up to hold the Bulls to seven hits, with Alex Wilson, the second pitcher used, picking up the win with a scoreless seventh inning of work, and Anthony Carter wiggling out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to earn the save.
PawSox starter Anthony Ranaudo worked the first six innings, allowing four hits and a run in the second inning and striking out six.
Jeremy Hazelbaker, Justin Henry, and Holt each had two hits to lead the PawSox’s offense. Heiker Meneses and Henry also scored on Holt’s clutch hit.
