PALM BAY, FLORIDA- Rene Longtin, 80, of Palm Bay, Florida and formerly of Blackstone, MA, passed away at home on October 9, 2013 after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the son of William and Rosanna (Cayer) Longtin.
He is survived by his wife Gail (Eastwood) Longtin, two daughters Laurie (Longtin) Martinetty and Joyce Longtin, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren all of Palm Bay, two sisters Dorothy (Longtin) Kross of Cumberland, RI and Faith (Longtin) Gaudet of Woonsocket, RI as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his parents and several siblings, two brothers William and Leo Longtin, five sisters Rita (Longtin) Bousquet, Irene May Longtin, Rose (Longtin) Jolin, Mary Longtin and Shirley (Longtin) Lauzon-Hodgkins.
Rene attended St. Paul's School in Blackstone and Blackstone High School before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod and also served in Africa. He was a member of the Lion's organization in Blackstone and served as King Lion for a period of time. While in Florida he belonged to the Moose Lodge, VFW and other service organizations.
Rene loved sports, especially baseball and his favorite team the Boston Red Sox. He played on local teams and coached Girls' Softball in Blackstone as well as Little League and Babe Ruth teams. He also was involved in the formation of a soccer league.
Rene was a dedicated family man and thoroughly enjoyed taking an active part in all the gatherings and parties for all of his relatives. He will be sadly missed. Final arrangements were private and took place in Palm Bay.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 5:00 PM at St. Paul's Church in Blackstone.
