RED SOX WIN WORLD SERIES!

October 30, 2013

BOSTON – A year ago, they were dead last. Before the season, not many people around baseball believed they had enough talent to escape the American League East basement.
The 2013 Boston Red Sox made the free world stand up and take notice Wednesday night, capping off an incredible worst-to-first turnaround with a win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the World Series. The championship is the eighth in Boston franchise history and the third since 2004.
Facing a pitcher that shut them down in Game 2 of the Fall Classic, the Red Sox broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as Shane Victorino cleared the bases with a double. Seeing his first game action since Saturday, Victorino returned as Boston’s No. 6 hitter after batting behind leadoff batter Jacoby Ellsbury for much of the year.
Victorino was in the middle of Boston’s three-run fourth inning, connecting for a run-scoring single that helped lower the curtain on Michael Wacha’s night. The St. Louis rookie pitcher was touched for six runs on five hits.
The Red Sox had no such issues with their starting pitcher. Though he was tested repeatedly, John Lackey turned in 6.2 innings of one-run ball. Stephen Drew made the announced crowd of 38,447 forget about his dismal postseason as the shortstop delivered a solo home run in the fourth inning.
