McGair: PawSox release statement on Gary DiSarcina leaving to become Angels' third-base coach

November 5, 2013

PAWTUCKET -- Once again, the winds of change have swept through the manager's office at McCoy Stadium.

Tuesday saw Gary DiSarcina leave to become the third-base coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a franchise that the Massachusetts native is quite familiar with. He played 12 years for the Angels and served as a special assistant to the team's general manager during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

"When we hired him back from LA, we knew it wasn't going to be for a long period of time," said Red Sox Assistant General Manager Mike Hazen on Tuesday.

DiSarcina ended up posting an 80-63 record during his first and only season as manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox, a mark good enough to capture the International League's North Division title. The PawSox advanced to the Governors' Cup finals before falling to eventual champion Durham.

A total of 64 PawSox players played for DiSarcina in 2013, the list of notables including several players who went on to register an impact with the 2013 World Champion Boston Red Sox.

"Gary did a fantastic job for the PawSox in so many ways this past season," said PawSox PR Director Bill Wanless. "Players loved playing for DiSar as evident by the club winning the IL North Championship and coming within two victories of repeating as Governors' Cup Champions. He did that while never losing sight of developing players for the Boston Red Sox - several of whom were instrumental in the Red Sox capturing the World Series.

"Off the field, Gary represented the Pawtucket Red Sox with class. He enjoyed everything that came with being the PawSox manager including a great rapport with fans and media. He earned his place among the many outstanding managers in PawSox history and we thank him for a terrific year in 2013."
