Police say officer fired gun near station

November 16, 2013

WOONSOCKET – The Woonsocket police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred near Pond and Clinton streets about 1:20 a.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported.

The news was announced in a one-paragraph statement issued by the departmental spokeswoman at 11:08 a.m. Saturday. The release offered few details, but Detective Jamie Paone said an officer fired a weapon outdoors during an investigation described as “domestic related.”

“It’s all under investigation,” she said later. “Although there were no injuries whenever an officer fires a weapon in the line of duty we consider it a serious matter and it’s required that we conduct an investigation. More details will be provided on Monday.”

There are no residential structures at the corner of Clinton and Pond streets, but one of the buildings there is the police station. Paone said the shooting did not stem from any arrest or official police activity that originated within the station, however.

She declined to identify the officer who fired the weapon, how many rounds were fired, or whether it is known what, if anything, may have been struck by a bullet. She did say that no person was struck by a bullet.

The full text of the police statement is as follows:

”On November 16, 2013 at approximately 1:20 A.M. there was an officer involved shooting in the area of Clinton St. and Pond St. Members of the Woonsocket Police Department were actively investigating a domestic related incident. No one was injured as a result of the shooting. The case is still under investigation.”
