WOONSOCKET – In addition to beefed-up school aid, the $8.7 billion state budget signed by Gov. Lincoln Chafee a couple of days ago has something that Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt has been lobbying for a long time: money to bring the makeover of World War II Veterans Memorial State Park to the starting line.
The spending plan includes $1.25 million over five years for park upkeep and staffing, a previously missing piece of the funding puzzle that had waylaid the project.
The cash also paves the way for the city to take possession of the 15-acre park from the state Department of Environmental Management, a move the agency has been advocating for at least six years.
“I’m excited about it,” Baldelli-Hunt told The Call Monday. “There are a lot of positives for us in getting that park back.”
