WARWICK --- It’s high school hockey at its finest, one of the top high school rivalries in Rhode Island, and guaranteed to draw an energetic, standing-room-only crowd every time the two teams step onto the ice.
It’s Mount St. Charles Academy vs. Bishop Hendricken High, and high school fans won’t have to wait long to get a taste of this classic showdown, because tomorrow at 8:30 p.m., they will collide at the Hawks’ Thayer Arena.
Unfortunately, the two sides will only meet one more time during the regular season -- on Friday, Jan. 14, at Adelard Arena – because Division I expanded from seven to 10 teams with the addition of Lincoln, Barrington, and North Kingstown.
Both the Mounties and Hawks have blown out all of their opponents en route to quick 3-0 starts. The Mounties outscored Barrington, Smithfield, and Lincoln by a 30-1 count, and the Hawks took care of N.K., Cranston West, and Smithfield by a combined 22-1 score.
The Mounties’ co-captains, Trevor Plante and Zach Samborsky, currently lead the league in scoring, with Plante producing nine goals and five assists, and Samborsky adding three goals and nine assists.
Mike Magerman also has five goals (four in a 9-1 win over Lincoln) and five assists, and senior goaltender Dan Foster (38 saves on 39 shots) is playing very well in his first year as a starter.
Senior co-captain Jeff Giusti, junior Mike Fairbanks, and sophomore David Mitchell are the Hawks’ top scoring threats, and senior co-captain John McCarthy is Hendricken’s top defenseman.
Both teams will be in action tonight and trying their best not to overlook their opponents and glance ahead to what awaits them on Saturday.
The Mounties will entertain Burrillville (1-2) in the 9 p.m. nightcap of a doubleheader at Adelard Arena. Division II foes Cumberland (1-0-2) and Coventry (2-1) will skate in the 7:30 p.m. opener.
The Hawks will take on Moses Brown at 8 p.m. at Thayer Arena, while the Quakers have only played one league game, they sparkled in it and rolled to an 8-1 win over the Lions.
