Noel Boleslaw Wolny
WOONSOCKET - Noel Boleslaw Wolny, 73 of Woonsocket, RI died peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 with his family by his side.
He was born in Cheratte, Belgium in 1937 and moved to Poland with his family in 1949. He immigrated to the United States with his wife and their son in 1964. They made their home in Woonsocket where his fluency in French helped them to transition to their new life in their adopted country, where he later became a naturalized citizen.
Noel worked as a welder for many years at the Simeone Corporation in Wrentham, Mass. Before retiring in 1982. From there he went on to earn his Bachelors degree in Polish studies as well as an Associates degree in Business at Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, PA. He went on to work several teaching positions in area schools including Woonsocket, Holliston and Douglas public schools. Most recently he was employed at CVS Highlander Charter School in Providence, RI. where he was affectionately known as "Papa Noel".
He brought his love of soccer with him from Poland, where as a youth he played for a semi-professional team named Gryf. His impressive soccer career spans over a half century with multiple accolades and includes several college, high school, and youth coaching positions including Brown University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Dean Jr. College, North Smithfield High School, North Providence High School, BMR and most recently the girls soccer coach at Mount Saint Charles Academy, where the team motto was razem which means together in Polish. In 1990 he was inducted into the Fox Point Soccer Hall of Fame.
Noel may best be remembered as being instrumental in bringing soccer to the youth of the greater Blackstone valley. He founded and was President of the Cracovia Soccer Club for the past 31 years where generations of families gathered to both play and learn about the game. In 2008, the soccer fields at Rivers Edge Complex were dedicated and named the Wolny Family Soccer Facility.
He was also a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church where he was both the Director of Religious Education and Co Chair of the Catholic Charity Fund Appeal.
He is survived by his wife, Halina Z. (Myslicki) Wolny of Woonsocket, a son Marek and his wife Michele of Woonsocket, a daughter Dr. Yvonne M. Wolny, DMD of Woonsocket, RI, a daughter Elizabeth Savoie and her husband Guy of North Smithfield, a son Adam and his wife Amber of Millbury, Mass and 6 grandchildren Caitlyn, Nicholas, Marianna, Noah, Ethan and Ryan.
Relatives and friends are invited to a mass of Christian burial on Monday, March 7th at 11:00 am at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Harris Ave, Woonsocket, burial to follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation hours will be Saturday, March 5th from 2 to 6 pm and Sunday, March 6th from 1 to 4 pm. at Kubaska funeral home, 33 Harris Ave in Woonsocket.
