WOONSOCKET — A city man was arrested after he bit off piece of a man's ear in a fight Sunday night, police said.
Peter Beauvil, 22, was arraigned in District Court on one count of mayhem, a felony. Beauvil was sent to the Adult Correctional Institutions after failing to post bail Monday, according to the judiciary's Web site.
Police said they responded to a report of a fight behind 19 Fabien St. shortly after 6 and discovered 22-year-old Jeffrey Martino clutching his ear in pain, his shirt heavily saturated with blood and “two large bite marks” plainly visible on his arm and back, Patrolman Anthony Conetta Jr. reported.
Martino told police he had been involved in a running feud with Beauvil. The fight broke out when the two crossed paths as Martino was on his way home from a nearby wash-and-fold.
Another witness, however, told police Beauvil, who is African-American, lost his temper when Martino called him the n-word, according to a police report.
Police found Beauvil moments after the incident in his girlfriend's apartment, near where the fight took place. He denied any wrongdoing.
Martino, meanwhile, was taken to the hospital by rescue squad. Police said a visible chunk of the upper ridge of his ear was apparenty bitten off in the altercation, but they were uncertain how he would be treated for the injury.
