James B. Burns
NO. SMITHFIELD- James B. Burns, age 82, of No. Smithfield, a former district sales manager for the General Electric Company, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the husband of Kathleen (Toomey) Burns.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Matthew J. and Alice (Kilcline) Burns and had lived in RI for most of his life.
He also lived in Simsbury, Ct for a period of time while working for General Electric. After retiring from General Electric, he worked for the former Electric Maintenance Works, Woonsocket.
He began working for General Electric in 1953 as a sales engineer and later became New England District Industrial and Electric Utility Market Manager in Waltham, MA until his retirement.
He was a 1946 graduate of Woonsocket High School, where he was a member of the baseball, basketball and football teams. He was a 1953 graduate of Providence College and also attended the University of Rhode Island Extension School of Engineering. He was a former member of the Providence Engineering Society and a past president of the Rhode Island Electric League.
He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving aboard the light cruiser U.S.S. Atlanta CL-104 and was a member of the U.S.S. Atlanta Reunion Association. He was a member of the VFW Post 6342, Forestdale, the Ancient Order of Hibernians-Division #17, Blackstone, MA and senior club member of the Woonsocket YMCA. He was also one of the original members of the Woonsocket Field of Dreams softball league and was also a loyal and avid fan of the Red Sox, Bruins and NE Patriots
He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, Slatersville and was one of the founders and long time volunteer of the original No. Smithfield Youth Football league sponsored by the former Tupperware Company back in 1962.
In addition to his wife, Kathleen, he leaves two sons, Dennis J. Burns of Cumberland and Timothy J. Burns of Woonsocket, a daughter, Mary E. Mingolla of No. Smithfield and six grandchildren, Matthew, Edward, Kailin and Timothy Burns and Michael and Lili Mingolla
His funeral will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 9AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, Church St., Slatersville. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Blackstone. Calling hours are Friday from 5 - 8PM.
