PROVIDENCE --- The state finals won’t be held for another two months, but that didn’t stop two-time defending champion Mount St. Charles from feeling right at home in a rare regular-season affair at Providence College’s Schneider Arena, the home of the RIIL hockey championships.
Senior Caitlin Shea and freshman Elisabeth Bedard each netted a pair of goals and senior Lauren Levesque added a goal and two assists on Friday night to lead the Mounties to a dominant 5-0 win over the Cranston Thunderbirds co-op team.
Briana Castro and Allison Shea each also added two assists for the Mounties, who bumped their record to 8-1 and moved back into a tie for first place with La Salle Academy, which was idle last night.
And like a handful of the Mounties’ victories this winter, this one wasn’t hard to produce. They kept play in the Thunderbirds’ end of the rink for almost the entire night and ended up outshooting them by a 34-10 margin, including 15-1 in the middle period.
The Mounties needed just 21 seconds and their third shot of the night to score their first goal, as Levesque backhanded the rebound of a shot by Caitlin Shea past Thunderbirds goalie Abbey Torres.
At 4:13, Berard doubled the Mounties’ lead by slipping a pass by Castro past Torres. The Mounties wouldn’t light the lamp again for the rest of the period, but they struck early and often in the second to put the game out of reach.
Caitlin Shea scored her goals in the first 5:28 of that period by tapping in the rebound of a shot by Allison Shea just 10 seconds into play, and then blasting a pass from behind the net by her twin sister five minutes later.
A minute after that score, Berard produced her second goal by again making good on a pass from Castro.
Cranston’s best chance to score came on a 5-on-3 power play that lasted 90 seconds and stretched from the end of the second period to the first minute of the third, but they were only able to manage three harmless shots.
Mounties goalie Sarah Erban, who played the first two periods, and backup Arianna Tourtellott, who took over in the third period and stopped six of the Thunderbirds’ shots, teamed up to record MSC’s fifth shutout of the season.
The Thunderbirds, a three-school co-op team that features 15 players from Cranston West, six from East Greenwich, and three from Cranston East, fell to 2-5-1.
