Hopefully the passion and enthusiasm that Cumberland native Mike Roose has for his new venture with the Boston Red Sox – that of strength and conditioning coordinator of the entire minor-league system – came across loud and clear in an article that ran earlier this week. Given Roose’s gun-ho/take-charge nature, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’s a big believer in the bubbly enthusiasm first-year BoSox manager Bobby Valentine has brought to the organization.
“I hope his energy rubs off on everybody because he’s has a lot of good ideas. He wants every part of the staff that’s (presently in Fort Myers) to help the players,” Roose said. “He wants to know what’s going to make sure the players perform at their best and how as a staff this can get done.”
Roose feels the hands-on fashion in which Valentine has chosen to run his first spring training with Boston has helped ease the period of transition from previous skipper Terry Francona to the new guy who’s now calling the shots.
“(One day last week) I got to watch practice and it was really efficient,” was the summary of activity Roose offered. “There’s not a lot of wasted time and a lot of good baseball work getting in.
“On my side, Bobby has said that if Pat (Sandora, Boston’s new strength and conditioning coach) and Mike Boyle (strength and conditioning consultant) are saying this needs to be done to make sure the players are healthy all year and going to be strong, then that’s what you need to do,” Roose added.
