WOONSOCKET – Hundreds of city retirees will soon be getting letters in the mail from the Budget Commission, apprising them of possible rollbacks coming in pension and health benefits.
Commissioner Peder Schaefer says two sets of letters are being drafted, including one that specifically addresses the cost of living adjustment in the local pension plan for retired public safety officers. About 200 of the 252 ex-police officers and firefighters covered receive COLAs, depending on the terms of their employment contracts at the time of their retirement, according to Finance Director Thomas Bruce.
Another letter will advise retired teachers, municipal workers and anyone else who receives health benefits as part of a city retirement package that their coverage plan might change along with that of current employees. There are nearly 600 retirees from municipal government who will receive a letter, but a precise number for teachers is still being firmed up, according to Bruce.
