PAWTUCKET – Mount St. Charles may have failed in its attempt to capture a third consecutive R.I. Division II Team Tournament championship at Slater Park’s Mike Kenny Courts on Saturday afternoon, but it sure didn’t show in its players’ classy collective mind-sets afterward.

CUMBERLAND – For five-plus innings, this Division I-B affair between Cumberland and East Providence highs was defined as a premier pitchers’ duel.

It sure didn’t end that way.

Guarding a skimpy 1-0 advantage entering the back half of the sixth, the Clippers exploded for six runs on six straight hits – four for extra bases – to coast to a 7-0 blowout triumph over the Townies before perhaps 70 fans at Tucker Field on Friday afternoon.

With it, CHS improved to 10-6 overall and, more importantly, 10-5 in I-B to solidify its second-place position behind division-leading North Kingstown.

LINCOLN – Mount St. Charles officially earned the right to once again defend its team title after holding on for a 4-3 win over Classical on Thursday at Lincoln High School. The Mounties, who have captured the past two Division II titles and are the No. 2 season this year, will face undefeated and top see Wheeler Saturday at Slater Park.
